IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Albert "Shorty"
Glenn
June 23, 1926 – July 1, 2017
Affectionately known as Shorty, he was born on June 23, 1926, to Frank Leslie Glenn and Matilda Reed Glenn. He is survived by his wife, Betty Luker Glenn, and her son, Randy Luker. He is also survived by his two daughters and their children and grandchildren: Penny Glenn Beaty (Virgil), IV Gunter (Beth), Harris, Lilly Grace, and Greyson Gunter; Kathryn Phillips (Bob), Brooke Hill (Blake), Hunter and Webb Hill, and Bill, Beth, Blake, and Gunter Phillips, and Reverend Sandra Glenn Brown (Dr. Brad) and Glenn Brown. He was preceded in death by his siblings, James Leslie Glenn (Cowboy), Mildred Eledge, Colonel Robert C. Glenn (Bob), and Sallie Moore and is survived by his sister, Dorothy Wood. He married Levie Collins in 1948 who preceded him in death.
His spirit of adventure was just beginning and led him to build a small single-engine airplane in his garage during the 1960s as he earned his private and commercial airline licenses. He loved to sail which led to the purchase of a sailboat and later a deep sea fishing boat, the Kathryn Scott, fondly named after his granddaughter. In addition, he enjoyed salmon fishing in Alaska , sailing in the Bahamas with friends, Will and Judy Hardy, hog hunting with Punchy Walters, as well as widespread travel throughout the US and Mexico in his motorhome. Mr. Glenn also enjoyed riding motorcycles which began at an early age.
In 1965 he opened Columbus Machine and Welding Works where he worked until his retirement. He loved a mechanical challenge of any type and prided himself in repairing anything rather than replacing it with a new version.
Mr. Glenn was a member of the Masons, Shriners, VFW, Good Sam Camping Club, North MS Emmaus, and Shaeffer's Chapel United Methodist Church, where his love of and faith in Jesus Christ was nurtured and strengthened.
One of the highlights of his later years was the honor of being selected to go to Washington, DC, on an honor flight for WWII veterans where he was accompanied by many other veterans as they toured war memorials at the National Mall in Washington, DC.
Visitation will be held at 10 am at Shaeffer's Chapel on Wednesday, July 5 th , with a funeral service following at 11 am and internment at Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Curtis Bray officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Lowndes Funeral Home. Active pallbearers are Jimmy Williams, Jerry Reynolds, IV Gunter, Alvin Loftis, Dickie Gossett, and George Gearhart. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Brad Brown, Dr. Brett Brown, Bob Phillips, and the men of Shaeffer's Chapel UMC.
