Alfred Lee Henckel, 88, passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, at his residence. His family will hold a private graveside memorial service at a later date. Lowndes Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to be entrusted with local arrangements.
Mr. Henckel was born January 21, 1931, in Michigan, Indiana, to the late Alfred Lee Henckel and Viola Rapp Henckel. He served his country proudly, while enlisted in the United States Navy. Mr. Henckel was an excellent tradesman and worked his whole life as a Cobbler. Known throughout Michigan City as "Mr. Al," he owned and operated Al's Shoe Repair for over 57 years. A Christian by faith, he was a member of Country Side Church in Michigan City. He was also a member of the local American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He was also passionate about horseback riding, which he was able to enjoy throughout his life. Mr. Henckel was a loving and devoted husband and father and will greatly missed by his family, as well as all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Henckel was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marion Henckel in 2014; and one brother Jack Henckel.
He is survived by his three daughters: Kathy Maxey, Monica Pagels and Marsha Zawacke; six grandchildren: Marlo Skubic, Troy Zawacke, Chester Maxey, Rodney Maxey, Chad Pagels and Virginia Lang; twelve great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and one sister Bev Drzewiecki.
