Obituary

Dr. Alice Virginia "Ginger" Young, 68 of Columbus, MS passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Golden Triangle, Columbus, MS. Visitation will be Saturday, May 9, 2015 form 9:30 am - 11:00 am at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am in the Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Steve Vacik and Bro. Jerry Davis officiating. Interment will be in Moorhead Cemetery, Moorhead, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Miss Young was born October 19, 1946 to the late William B. Young, Jr. & Mattye Upchurch Magers in Greenwood, MS. She was raised in Moorhead and Greenville, MS and graduated from Greenville High School in 1964. Miss Young attended Bob Jones University, Delta State University and Mississippi State University and received her Doctorate of Education. She was a teacher, high school principal and administrator at Greenville Christian School. Recently, she was Associate Dean of Instruction of the Night Program at East Mississippi Community College, Mayhew, MS. Ginger had numerous talents and interests. She was a superior teacher, encourager and listener. She loved movies, traveling, writing, drawing, lace cookies and spending time with "her girls". She was called many things by many peopleMiss Young, Dr. Young, G. G., Doc., friend, but to most of us she was our Ginger. She left a great legacy. In addition to her parents, Miss Young was preceded in death by her step-father - Douglas M. Magers, maternal grandparents - Virgie and Ira Upchurch and paternal grandparents - William and Alice Young, Sr. Miss Young is survived by her special family - Stacy and Ann Hester, Jennifer Hester (Jamie) Anderson, Lauren Hester (Brandon) Garriga, Neely Hester, Emily Hester, Olivia Ball, Carson Ball, Grayson Garriga and Anna Peyton Garriga and her uncle - Lindau Burton. Pallbearers will be Michael Black, Wes Ammon, Ty Abernathy, Jamie Anderson, Wayne Bryan, George Buell, Michael Coffey and Tommy Ware. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Mark Ellis, Brandon Garriga and faculty and staff at East Mississippi Community College - Mayhew. In lieu of flowers memorials/donations may be made to Palmer Home for Children, P.O. Box 746, Columbus, MS 39701 or American Cancer Society, 1380 Livingston Lane, Jackson, MS 39213.
