At sunrise, July 11, 2015, Ms. Betty went to be with her Lord and Savior. She was at home surrounded by her four children. Her visitation will be Monday, July 13 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Her funeral service will be Tuesday, July 14, 3:00pm at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, Ethelsville, AL with Dr. Shawn Parker officiating and Bro. Jim Godwin assisting. Ms. Betty will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Columbus, MS. Ms. Betty was born March 17, 1939 in Columbus, MS to the late Thomas Hardy Jones and Emma Ione Sanders Jones. She spent her childhood in Columbus, MS and graduated from S. D. Lee High School in 1957. In 1956 she married Jack Speed with whom she raised four children. She lived in New Hope and was well known for her beautiful gladiolus. She was a very active member of First Free Will Baptist Church, Columbus, MS. Later she moved to Ethelsville, AL and attended Tabernacle United Methodist Church. Her greatest pleasures were working in her yard, being a housewife and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was well known for making divinity and red velvet cakes. Ms. Betty was a fabulous cook. In 1997, she married Jack Conn. They enjoyed traveling and spending time together. She loved hummingbirds, Atlanta Braves Baseball, and her Sunday School Class. Her proudest accomplishments were being a loving mother, MeMaw, Aunt, and homemaker. She had a host of lifelong friends with whom she had many memories, but none greater than her two sisters Martha and Sue. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Jack Conn and her sister Martha Shackleford. Ms. Betty is survived by her daughters-Lisa (Eddy) Godfrey-Millport, AL, Debra (Johnny) Crimm, Ethelsville, AL, Tammie (David) Parker, Ethelsville, Al; son-Jack "Bud" Speed Jr. , Milton Araujo, West Palm Beach, FL; stepdaughter-Jackie (Tommy) Orr, Reform, AL; stepson-Jeff (Natasha) Conn, Ethelsville, AL; sister-Sue (David) Shelton, Columbus, MS; grandchildren-JoLynne Robertson, Jacklyn Humphres, Jed Hickman, Emily Hubbert, Tracy Weathers, Diana Stapp, Hunter Crimm, Zackery Parker, Lucas Parker, and Megan Parker; Step-grandchildren-Mason Orr, Makenzie Conn and Macy Conn; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jed Hickman, Zackery Parker, Lucas Parker, Hunter Crimm, Steve Shackelford, and Mark Turner. Honorary Pallbearers will be Members of Tabernacle United Methodist Church.
