Obituary

Billie Wartes Billie Faye Totter Wartes, 77 of Columbus, MS passed away Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-GT, Columbus, MS. Visitation was held Sunday, August 21, 2011 from 3 – 5 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Graveside services were held Monday, August 22, 2011 at 10 AM at Memorial Gardens, Columbus, MS with Father Robert Dore officiating and Jimmy Ruffin and Johnny Wartes assisting. Mrs. Wartes was born August 9, 1934 in Balmorhea, TX to the late James Winfield and Ocie Faye Carpenter Totter. She was a resident of Columbus, MS for the past 39 years having moved from Macon, MS and was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church, Columbus, MS. Mrs. Wartes was retired as a teacher for the Lowndes County school district with 18 years of service. She was a member of the Daughters of Confederacy, attended and graduated from Mississippi University for Women, involved in the afterhours program at West Lowndes Middle School, and tutored high school students. Mrs. Wartes enjoyed genealogy research and loved reading, crossword puzzles, computer games, flowers, traveling, animals, and her children. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wartes is preceded in death by her husband – Loyd LoWayne Wartes. Mrs. Wartes is survived by her daughters – Linda Faye Wartes (Richard) Lamison, Columbus, MS, Janice L. Wartes Younger, Columbus, MS, Glinda Jean Wartes (Tommy) Montgomery, Caledonia, MS; sons – Johnny LoWayne (Donna) Wartes, Flowood, MS, Matthew Paul Wartes, Columbus, MS; brother – Jimmy Totter, Prescott Valley, AZ; sister – Betty Totter (Wendell) Morris, Phoenix, AZ; nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and a host of nieces of nephews. Pallbearers were Michael Wartes, Chris Wartes, Brian Lamison, Anthony Harrell, Buddy Easley, and Jimmy Ruffin. Honorary Pallbearers were Tommy Montgomery, Richard Lamison, and Paul Mayhan. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 1380 Livingston Lane, Jackson, MS 39213.
