On Tuesday, January 3, 2023, George Douglas "Buddy" Shelton, 79, of Columbus, MS finished the course and joined his Heavenly Father.

Visitation will be Friday, January 6, from 4:00-6:00 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS.  The funeral service will be Saturday 7, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Fairview Baptist Church, Columbus, MS, with Dr. Breck Ladd officiating.  The interment will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Columbus, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Shelton was born on October 21, 1943, to the late Lorainne Alexander Shelton and J.C. Shelton, in Lowndes County, MS.  He was a 1962 graduate of S.D. Lee High School and went on to receive his Masters degree from Mississippi State University, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Mr. Shelton was a teacher at New Hope High School for 32 years where he taught 9 ^th grade Mississippi History and Civics, drove a school bus for 39 years, and was a senior sponsor. He was a deacon at Fairview Baptist Church in Columbus, served at Loaves and Fishes, was on the local board for the Emmaus Community, and worked as a bailiff at New Hope's voting precinct.  He will be remembered for his friendships, quick wit, and servant's heart.  The family would like to offer a special thanks to the staff of Golden Triangle Hospital and Trinity Healthcare Center.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn (Butch) Jones.

He is survived by his wife- Karen Moore Shelton; daughter- Jennifer (Andy) Caldwell; grandchildren– Sarah Caldwell and Mary Grace (Austin) Dodson; great-grandchild Briar Dodson; brother– Joe (Beverly) Shelton; and sister– Marianne Lowry.

Pallbearers will be Wes Barrett, Bain Nickels, Brad Fleming, Lee Gillis, Brad Haines, and Scotty Murrah.  Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of Sandy Sanders Sunday School Class, Sammy Townsend, Former Students, and the Faculty of New Hope School.
