Mr. Charlie Herndon Mr. Charlie Herndon, 79, Columbus, MS went to be with the Lord Sunday October 14, 2012 at North Mississippi Medical Center, Tupelo, MS. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 17, 2012 from 11am -12 pm at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. A graveside service will be held immediately following visitation at Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, MS with Bro. James Black officiating, and Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Mr. Herndon was born March 19, 1933 in Greene County, Alabama to the late Frank O. and Cherry Jones Herndon. Graduating from Auburn University in 1953 with his degree in mechanical engineering, Mr. Herndon went on to serve as a pilot in the US Army. Mr. and Mrs. Herndon were married on April 7, 1955 in Tucson, AZ. Following his service, Mr. and Mrs. Herndon owned and operated White's Hardware Store in downtown Columbus for 23 years until their retirement in 1980. A member and officer in the Holiday Rambler Travel club, they spent many of their retirement years traveling the country, spending their winter months in Alamo, TX. An active member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church in Columbus, Mr. Herndon was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors in need. Mr. Herndon enjoyed watching Atlanta Braves baseball games, along with John Wayne western movies. An avid gardener, Mr. Herndon took great pride in his lawn and garden: you could always find him outdoors working on some project or other. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Herndon was loved by many and will be deeply missed. In addition to his parents he is preceded and in death by sisters-Jean Pritchett, Helen Reynolds, Martha Ezell, Virginia Ezell, and a brother, George Herndon. Mr. Herndon is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Janet White Herndon, Columbus, MS, son-Charles (Carol) Herndon, Madison, AL, grandchildren-Laura, Will, and Andrew Herndon, great grandchildren-Corbin and Leah, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
