On Sunday, June 28, 2015, Christine (Chris) Carmichael Harmon went to be with the Lord. She passed away peacefully in her sleep. Visitation and funeral will be held at First Assembly of God Church, 2201 Military Road, Columbus, MS, on Tuesday, June 30th from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 1st at 12:00 PM. She will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Services will be conducted by Pastor Jody Gurley with assistance by Rev. Jesse and Dr. Barbara Ray. Interment will follow at Friendship Cemetery with Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Christine (Chris) Carmichael Harmon was born in Meridian, Mississippi on December 22, 1930 to Porter Myrick Carmichael and Allie Maye Moseley Carmichael. She grew up in Meridian and finished High School and Jr. College there and graduated from LIFE Pacific College in Los Angeles, California in 1953. She met the love of her life at the Four Square church in Meridian and on January 22, 1954, she married John Wesley Harmon, Sr. In due time, God blessed them with a daughter Rebecca (Becky) and a son Wesley. John moved his family to Columbus in the late 60's when he accepted a position at William I. Rosamond, Architectural firm. Chris was an Executive Secretary all of her working career. She worked at Mississippi University for Women in the President's office for Dr. Charles Hogarth and for over 18 years as secretary to the President of CECO Metal Buildings, Charles Waldron and Talmage G. Rogers, Jr. Chris committed her life to Christ as a child and served the Lord in her home as a Godly mother, a faithful church member and through the many relationships she built over the years. As a young lady she attended the Four Square Gospel Church in Meridian, and First Freewill Baptist Church in Columbus where she played the piano and sang in the choir. She was a charter member of Evangel Assembly of God (now Vibrant Church) under founding pastor Rev. Jesse Ray's leadership and presently a member of First Assembly of God. She served God in various capacities at church and was also a lifetime member of the Gideon Auxiliary, having served as a state, area, and local offices. She was a previous member of the Lowndes County Republican Women and the State Republican Party. She was a volunteer in the Contact Helpline Ministry for over 30 years and served on the Board of Directors. She was a member of the Columbus Music Study Club and Keenagers monthly Luncheon Club at First United Methodist and the Tuesday Morning Bible Study at First Assembly. Chris was preceded in death by John, her beloved husband of 53 years, her parents: Porter and Allie Maye Carmichael, and her two brothers, Billy Carmichael and Dewey Carmichael. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Wesley and Nora Harmon, her daughter Becky Abrams; five grandchildren: Christi Gilliland and Katie Gilliland, Aaron Studdard, Sarah and Clay Harmon, and three great Granddaughters: Adrian, Renee and Amery Gilliland, and two sisters-in-law: Virginia Carmichael McLemore and Jeanette Carmichael and four nieces and nephews: Lisa Carmichael Sellars, Kim Carmichael, Darrell Carmichael and Sharon Carmichael DeVaney. Pallbearers will be Robert Sanders, Jamie Harvey, Herbert Caston, Clyde Hollis, Rob Langston, and Charles Snodgrass. Honorary Pallbearers will be Beth Goodman, Bonnie Pounders and Grace Dunakin (These were Chris' bridesmaids and remained close friends to this day); Members of the Local and State Gideons Auxilary; Dr. Barbara Ray's Sunday School Class; First Assembly of God Tuesday Morning Bible Study; Reverend Orlando Miller; Reggie Wilder; Her Friends and Neighbors; Camelia Hospice and Laverne Luker (These precious people took care of Chris the last several months).
