Dempsey Hollis Dempsey Hollis, 83 of Columbus, MS passed away Monday, October 17, 2011 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – GT, Columbus, MS. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 19, 2011 from 9 AM to 11 AM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 11 AM in the Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. James Black officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Gardens, Columbus, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS directing. Mr. Hollis was born November 20, 1927 in Lamar Co., AL to the late John W. and Stella Merchant Hollis. He was a resident of Columbus, MS for the past 61 years having moved from Lamar Co., AL. Mr. Hollis was a member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church, Columbus, MS where he helped with Loaves and Fishes and the Senior Citizen's Luncheon at the church. He retired from Columbus Lowndes Recreation after ten years of service. Mr. Hollis served in the U. S. Army and was a member of VFW Post No. 4272, Columbus, MS. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sons – Gary Hollis and Steve Hollis; brothers – Bilbo Hollis, L. J. Hollis, Michael Hollis; grandchildren – Jonathan Cooper and Edward Nelson. Mr. Hollis is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maurine Hollis, Columbus, MS; daughter – Wanda (Jim) Cooper, Columbus, MS; daughters-in-law – Tammy Hollis, Brandon, MS; Mary Jane Hollis, Como, MS; brothers – J.W. (Shirley) Hollis, Clinton, MI; Jerry Hollis, RI; sisters – Ruth Bostick, Tallapoosa, GA; Rosa Porter, Columbus, MS; Barbara Humbers, Sulligent, AL; grandchildren – Lance (Melissa) Cooper, Todd (Barbara) Cooper, Katie (Chris) Doughty, Cory (Chad) Waldrop, Taylor Hollis, Scott (Debra) Hollis, Jamie (Bridget) Nelson and Ronny Cooper; eight great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Harold Youngblood, Hiram Chain, Scott Hollis, Lance Cooper, Jamie Nelson and Todd Cooper. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Sharing Workers Sunday School Class of St. Stephen United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the charity of donor's choice.
