Obituary

Ernest Dowl Moore, born on December 10, 1934, in Calhoun County, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2024, in West Point, Mississippi, at the age of 89. His life, spanning nearly nine decades, was a testament to dedication, love, and community service.

Ernest was born to Ernest Washington and Mildred Chapman Moore, who instilled in him the values of hard work, integrity, kindness, and compassion. He grew up in a loving household in Grenada, Mississippi, where he formed cherished memories with his family.

A bright and diligent student, Ernest worked hard to escape a life of poverty. He graduated from Grenada High School in 1952. He then used his savings to pursue his lifelong dream of higher education at Mississippi State University, where he graduated in 1956 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Ernest joined the U.S. Air Force, serving as an assistant to two future generals in Northern Africa, one of whom was Robin Olds. After being discharged from the Air Force, Ernest moved to New York City and then Columbus, Ohio. He quickly realized he did not enjoy being an engineer, but his desire for knowledge persisted. Ernest returned to Mississippi State University and earned a Master of Business Administration in 1963. Ernest then pursued a doctorate at Indiana University, but the untimely death of his father caused him to return to Mississippi prematurely, and he never returned to complete his degree. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a successful career and a lifelong passion for learning.

After leaving Bloomington and returning briefly to Mississippi, Ernest eventually settled in South Florida, spending the vast majority of his life in Fort Lauderdale. There, he became a close friend and confidant to E.B. "Barney" McCool, and the two remained close until Barney's death in 1984.

In  2020, Ernest returned to the Golden Triangle Area for retirement, choosing Starkville, Mississippi—his "happy place"—due to his love for Mississippi State University.

Ernest's professional journey was marked by excellence and dedication. He was a highly respected engineer and teacher, but it was his personal life and community involvement that truly defined him. He was a proud member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, where he formed life long friendships and bonds that he cherished throughout his life. His commitment to his fraternity brothers was unwavering, and he took pride in supporting the fraternal organization.

One of Ernest's greatest passions was playing and teaching bridge. A Master Bridge Player and Instructor, he found immense joy in the complexities of the game and the camaraderie it fostered. He spent countless hours mentoring and guiding others, sharing his love for bridge and ensuring the tradition continued.

Family was the cornerstone of Ernest's life. He was preceded in death by his beloved siblings, Emma Jean Moore, Martha Evelyn Moore, and Bobby Allen Moore. Their memories lived on in his heart, and he often spoke of them with deep affection. Though his professional and community contributions were significant, Ernest's kindness and generosity extended beyond these realms. He believed in the power of giving back and made a lasting impact on the lives of those around him. He donated a Steinway piano to Mississippi State University's music department, helping the university become an All-Steinway School. Ernest also contributed to Mississippi State University's food assistance program, providing hot meals for students in need.

Ernest Dowl Moore's life will be celebrated in a private funeral service, honoring his wishes and the intimate nature of his family's bond. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy of love, dedication, and community spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ernest's name to a charitable organization of your choice, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping others.
