Eva Eugenia West Egger, 96, of Columbus, MS passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Trinity Healthcare, Columbus, MS. Visitation will be Thursday, February 13, 2014 from 12:00 - 2:00 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM with Bro. Ron McDougald officiating. Interment will be at Egger Cemetery, Caledonia, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Mrs. Egger was born December 21, 1917 in Bartahatchie, MS. She was the second of four children born to Onus Marion and Bessie Edgeworth West. She graduated from Caledonia High School in 1935 and in 1936 married James Herman Egger Jr. of Caledonia. They were married for 69 years until his death on November 27, 2005. Mrs. Egger lived her life to the fullest making the most of every day. She never met a stranger and always wore a smile. Her energetic, always positive "can do" attitude was an inspiration to all who knew her. Eva was a wonderful role model for five daughters whom she loved dearly. She was a great teacher. After working at the Caledonia Garment Plant for many years she worked at Caledonia Elementary School and was the first assistant teacher hired. Eva was a strong supporter of Caledonia School and enjoyed working with children. Eva's graduating class was instrumental in starting the first Alumni Banquet. She only missed one banquet since 1935 and was the recipient of the first Outstanding Alumni recognition award. In addition to her parents and her husband James, she was preceded in death by her brother, Bill (Corrine) West of Amory and a sister, Janie Mae (Robert Earl) Egger of Caledonia. She is survived by a sister, Catherine (Harold) Pickle of Bradenton, FL and five daughters: Dotty (the late Willis) Richards of New Hope, Evelyn (Bill) Thompson of Hamilton, Nancy (George) Gerhart of Caledonia, Sandra (Buddy) Slayton of New Hope and Donna (Randall) Grant of Aberdeen. She is survived by ten grandchildren: Scotty (Tina) Richards of Columbus, Robin (Kenny) Ballard and Dodie (Scott) Williams both of New Hope, Barry (Debbie) Thompson, Ken (Vicki) Thompson and Mark Thompson all of Hamilton, Stacy Hollis of Marietta, GA, Chris (Jocelyn) Hollis of Liberty, MS, Susan (Brandon) Rushing of New Hope and Callie Grant of Caledonia. Twenty five great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, six nieces and two nephews. Pallbearers will be Scotty Richards, Barry Thompson, Ken Thompson, Mark Thompson, Stacy Hollis and Chris Hollis. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. James Woodard and the Staff at Trinity Healthcare.
