Dr. Gordon Caldwell Johnston, III Dr. Gordon Caldwell Johnston, III, 84 of Columbus, MS passed away, Friday, December 16, 2011 at Oktibbeha County Hospital, Starkville, MS. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS in charge of arrangements. Dr. Johnston was born June 17, 1927 to the late Gordon and Thelma Hobbs Johnston in Birmingham, AL. He was a graduate of the prestigious St. Andrews High School, Sewanee, TN and a 1968 graduate of the University of Alabama. Dr. Johnston served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Kiwanis International and the University of Alabama Alumni Club. He moved to the area 37 years ago from Birmingham, AL and was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Columbus, MS. Dr. Johnston retired in 1992 from Mississippi State University after 27 years as a professor in the College of Education. Dr. Johnston is survived by his wife, Lynn "Honey" Johnston, Columbus, MS, Daughters – Jan Madden (James) O'Neal, Lafayette, LA, Melanie Madden Pharo, Columbus, MS, Son – Richard Lee Madden, Columbus, MS, Sister – Helen Ruth Hopkins, Brunswick, GA, Grandchildren – Leslie Lynn Byler, Robin Elizabeth Byler and David Michael Pharo and great-grandchild – Claudie Lynn Byler.
