Obituary

Grady Gene Phillips, 90, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2019, at his residence. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 29, 2019, from 5-7pm at Lowndes Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, December 30, 2019 at 2:00pm from the Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Shawn Dickey officiating and Bro. Sonny McLellan assisting. Interment will be at Memorial Gardens in Columbus.

Mr. Phillips was born October 25, 1929, in Jackson, MS, to the late Grady James and Ora Mamie Ray Phillips. His mother passed away when he was 8 years old and he was raised in Noxubee County by his Aunt Annie and Uncle Johnny Watt. He married Doris Dean Allsup on March 30, 1949. He worked tirelessly as a master mechanic with United Technologies until his retirement in 1993. With family always being a top-priority he selflessly allowed for his wife to stay at home and care for their four children, always hardworking and providing a Godly example. He was "tough as nails" and never gave up as he managed to persevere through whatever obstacles of life that were placed in his path. A Christian by faith, he had been a member of the Caledonia Church of Christ, where he had served as a past Elder. He had more recently attended the Seventh Street Church of Christ in Columbus. He was very intelligent and enjoyed "tinkering", especially with electrical projects and fixing things. His priorities were always Church, Family and Work and his motto: "I always tried my best, to do my very best." A doting husband and family man, he was especially proud of his role of "Paw Paw" to his six grandsons.

In addition to his parents, and the Aunt and Uncle who raised him, he is preceded in death by one grandson: Michael Adrian Carter.

He is Survived by his wife of (nearly) 71 years: Doris Dean Phillips; four children: Brenda (Ken) Carter of Caledonia, Johnny (Pam) Phillips of Steens, Jan (Earl) Harris of Columbus and Elesa (David) Kilpatrick of Caledonia; six grandsons: Neil (Susan) Phillips, Brian (Kelly) Carter, Chris Carter, Matt (Tracie) Phillips, Chase Harris and Daniel Kilpatrick; and six great grandchildren: Trenton Carter, Tannin Carter, Tyler Carter, Griffin Phillips and Adley Phillips.

Mr. Phillips' six grandsons will serve as Active Pallbearers. With the staff of Baptist Hospice and Dr Duckworth recognized as Honorary Pallbearers.
