Obituary

Helen Virginia Parrish Lingo, 86 of Columbus, MS passed away Sunday, November 2, 2014 at College View Personal Care, Columbus, MS. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 5, 2014 from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. A Graveside Service will be held Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Woodlawn Cemetery, Steens, MS with Bro. Melvin Mordecai officiating and Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Mrs. Lingo was born August 30, 1928 in Lonoke, AR to the late Barney and Rilla Margaret Hamilton Parrish. She and John Daniel "Buck" Lingo were married in 1944 after he had joined the Navy. Soon afterwards he was shipped to the Philippines . Margaret Rose was born during this time. She and Helen lived with Buck's mother, Rosie, in Lonoke, AR while he was away at war. The small family moved to Eudora, AR in the late 40's where they farmed cotton and later soybeans. Two more girls were born and all were raised there in the small Delta town. In the fall of '68 Buck and Helen came to Columbus in search of farm land in the prairie. The realtor also showed them a small restaurant for sale and hence Buck and Helen's was born. This second career was very successful and they became known for their delicious fresh meat hamburgers and mile high coconut and chocolate pies for 22 years. In 1990 they retired to the family farm on Billy Kidd Road where they both enjoyed raising cattle and working on the farm. Helen was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She loved sewing , raising day lilies and loved and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 58 yrs.-Buck Lingo, her daughter-Jeanie Prewitt ,her sister-Colleen Van Rosson, brother- David Parrish, and her son- in-law- Stan Bass. Mrs. Lingo is survived by daughters- Bobbi (Jim) Vaughn, Steens, MS and Dr. Margaret "Marge" Lingo Bass, Newman, GA; son in law-Zach Prewitt, Dermott, AR; grandchildren- Allison Prewitt, West Helena, AR, Tary Prewitt (Jackie), New Hampshire, Lane Bass Beddow (Brett), Jefferson, GA, Jon Bass, New Orleans, LA, Katie Rose Vaughn McCrary (Lu), Steens, MS and Jim Buck Vaughn (Kim) , Steens, MS; great-grandchildren-Taylor Prewitt, Allibess Dyer, Garrett Brown Vaughn, Nash McCrary , Rigg McCrary, Brooks Beddow and Macy Beddow. Pallbearers will be Doug Hill, Lonny Nickoles, Doug Lingo, Lu McCrary, Brett Beddow and Skip Burkhart. Honorary pallbearers will be Carolyn and Gene Reed, Gladys Morris, Sophie Yarborough and Christy Yerby. Memorials may be made to Woodlawn Cemetery Fund, 7712 Hwy. 12 East, Steens, MS 39766.
