Herbert Wayne Tolison, age 63, of Steens, MS, passed away on Saturday, November 14th, 2015. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 18th at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS with visitation and funeral services starting at 2:00. Herb was born on April 16th, 1952 in Chandler, Arizona to Herbert Bill Tolison and Mildred Brown. Herb served in the U.S. Navy from April 18th, 1969 until November 1972. Herb served his country during the Vietnam War. He was among the many men known as the "River Rats," who patrolled the Mekong River Delta. Herb was decorated with a National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. After he was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1969, Herb moved back to Big Spring, Texas. In 1978, he married Verna Sue Atkinson and had two children, Kristi Ann and Lea Renee Tolison. He worked on the oil ridges for many years. Later, he worked for the Texas Department of Transportation, where he retired. In 2009, Herb Moved to Steens, MS to be closer to his sister, Sherri. He bought a home with 3 acres of land. Herb was a member of the Local Chapter of Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. He enjoyed spending time outside, doing projects, going to flea markets, riding his Harley, and spending time with his girlfriend, Vicki. He also adored his dog, Casper. Herb was a very kind man who would help anyone. He had a genuine goodness about him that was easily recognized. Herb was saved this past September. We find comfort in knowing that he is resting peacefully in the arms of Jesus. Herb is preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Brown Evans, who passed away on December 16, 2001 and his father, Herbert Bill Tolison, who passed away January 16, 2004. Herbert Wayne Tolison is survived by his children - Lea Renee Tolison, of Castle Rock, Colorado and Kristie Ann Tolison, of Fritch, Texas. He is also survived by his 3 step-children, that he loved as his own, Rachael Savala-Rodgers, of Big Spring, Texas, Angela Weatherman, of San Angelo, Texas, and Tom Sawyers, of Big Spring, Texas. Herb is survived by his four siblings - Sherri Pennington, of Caledonia, MS, Jackie Durbin, of Altamont, Illinois, Mark Evans, of Windsor, Colorado, and Terri Pasden, of Columbus, Ohio. Herb also had 7 grandchildren, 10 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. Herb will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
