Obituary
Jack Smith Burks, Sr. , 89 of Columbus, MS passed away Saturday, December 17, 2016, at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice, Tupelo, MS.
Visitation will be Monday, December 19, 2016, from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM in the Lowndes Funeral Home chapel with Mr. Kevin Kay officiating and Mr. Stephen Burks, assisting. Interment will be in Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Burks was born August 29, 1927, to the late Edward Meeks and Gertrude Smith Burks in Millport, AL. He was a member of East Columbus Church of Christ, Columbus, MS. Mr. Burks retired in 1992 after owning and operating Burks Grocery for 40 years. He was an avid Mississippi State Fan and loved any sport Mississippi State was playing. Mr. Burks especially enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, Mr. Burks was preceded in death by his daughter in law – Sherry Burks.
Mr. Burks is survived by his wife of 65 years – Janie Grace Nason Burks, Columbus, MS; sons – Jack Smith (Patsy) Burks, Columbus, MS, Douglas Steven Burks, Columbus, MS, and Stanley Barron Burks, Eupora, MS; daughter – Cynthia Burks (Keith) Benton, Olive Branch, MS; grandchildren – Stephen (Ashley) Burks, Bryan (Becca) Benton, Mary Beth (Michael) Ketchum, Justin (Carley) Benton, Jessica Otts and Carley Otts; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Burks, Bryan Benton, Justin Benton, Michael Ketchum, Jay McCrary and Clyde Hollis. Honorary pallbearers will be J.B. Cox, Lloyd Cobb, Howard Robertson, Hayward James, Ray Crosby and the Men of East Columbus Church of Christ.
Memorials may be made to East Columbus Church of Christ Building Fund, P.O. Box 2253, Columbus, MS 39704.
