James Arnold Camp, 79, died July 14, 2016, at his home in Steens, MS. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with visitation preceding from 1:00 PM to 2: OO PM with Bro. Bill Hurt officiating and Bro. Shelby Hazzard assisting. Mr. Camp will be laid to rest in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Columbus, MS.
Mr. Camp was born on Oct. 6, 1936, in Greenwood Springs, MS to the late Lawrence Roy and Hattie Pearl Camp. He was the seventh of eleven children. A resident of the Columbus area for over 63 years, Mr. Camp retired in 2000 after a 40-year career with Hooker Chemical, which eventually became Akzo Nobel, where he worked as the shipping supervisor at the time of his retirement. A fun-loving personality, James Arnold, as he was known to most, loved his Savior, loved to laugh, and loved people. Known for his quick wit, green thumb, and mechanical knowledge, his hobbies included a love for yard work, small engine repair, travel, and spending time with family and friends. As an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, he was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. In addition to his parents, Mr. Camp was preceded in death by 5 sisters-Dorothy, Willadean, Ulean, Yvonne, and Ophie Lee; and 4 brothers-Donald, Randy, Ormand Lee, and Larry.
Mr. Camp is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ann J. Camp, Steens, MS and children-Jamie (Lisa) Camp, Reform, AL; Donnie (Sue) Camp (Sue) Texarkana, TX; Teresa Camp (Ronnie) Robertson, Prattville, AL; Allison Camp (Ron) Bedsole, Decatur, AL; Kim (Chris) Thurman, Brookhaven, MS; one sister – Charlene (Jimmy) Cook, Columbus, MS; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Robertson, Ron Bedsole, Chris Thurman, Jimmy Cook, Brent Camp, Blake Pfeiffer, Logan Bedsole, and Tanner Thurman. Honorary pallbearers will be Pleasant Hill Joy Sunday School Class, Ray Oglesby, Justin Wofford, Phillip Pennington, Chris Handley, Jimmy Cobb, David Braxton, and Hayes Williams.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 1383 Pleasant Hill Road, Columbus, MS 39702. The family would like to extend special appreciation to the offices, staff, and physicians of Dr. Duckworth, Dr. Alnas, Dr. Shroff (MD Anderson) and Gentiva Hospice Care.
