James "J.D." Ponds James D. "J.D." Ponds, 79, of Columbus, MS passed away, Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle, Columbus, MS. Visitation for Mr. Ponds will be Wednesday, August 31, 2011 from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral Service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jimmy Ray officiating. Interment will be in Forest Cemetery, Ethelsville, AL with Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Mr. Ponds was born July 14, 1932 in Ethelsville, AL to the late J.D. & Nettie Mae Simpson Ponds. He lived in the Columbus area his entire life. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Aliceville, AL and attended Fairview Baptist Church, Columbus, MS. Mr. Ponds retired as Police Chief with the City of Aliceville, AL and also worked as head of security at Leigh Mall in Columbus, MS. Mr. Ponds is survived by his wife – Joy Ponds, Columbus, MS, sons – James D. "Jimmy" Ponds, Aliceville, AL and James S. Ponds, Baldwyn, MS, sister – Jean (Buddy) Guin, Columbus, MS, brother – Wesley (Mary Ann) Ponds – Ethelsville, AL, grandchildren – Anthony (Kayla) Ponds and Kayla Ponds Hawkins. Pallbearers will be Mel Brewer, Anthony Ponds, Jerry Banks, Daniel Ponds, Bill Brownlee and Mark Caldwell. Honorary Pallbearers will be Shondale Harrison, Bill Herring and Dr. Matthew Wade.
