Obituary

James Larry Stone, 74 of Columbus, MS passed away Monday, March 4, 2013, at his residence. Visitation will be Thursday, March 7, 2013, from 6 – 8 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral services will be Friday, March 8, 2013, at 2 PM at 7th Street Church of Christ, Columbus, MS with Mr. Billy Ferguson and Mr. Mark Hawk officiating. He will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS directing. Mr. Stone was born November 29, 1938, in Oxnard, CA to Gladys L. Stone of College Station, TX and the late John Carey Stone. He retired in 2008 as an insurance agent with Allstate after 34 years of service. Mr. Stone has been a resident of Lowndes County, MS for the past 39 years, having moved from Houston, TX. He was a member of 7th Street Church of Christ, where he was also a deacon. Mr. Stone was a member of Toastmasters, Civitan, and Life Underwriters Association. He taught water and step aerobics at the YMCA and was an avid runner. Mr. Stone enjoyed riding motorcycles and collecting things, especially sports memorabilia. He also enjoyed working with the youth of 7th Street Church of Christ. In addition to his father, Mr. Stone is preceded in death by his son – Cary R. Stone. In addition to his mother, Mr. Stone is survived by his wife – Sandra Ferguson Stone, Columbus, MS; children – Sheryl S. Stone, FL, Lisa K. DuLaney, Columbus, MS, Lara K. (Michael) Rasco, Houston, TX, David (Krystal) Knoop, Caledonia, MS, Tammy K. (Dwayne) Wooten, Columbus, MS, Jennifer (Jimmy) Romero, Hamshire, TX, Larry Stone, Columbus, MS; daughter-in-law – Nora Wiley, Eldersburg, MD; sisters – Gerry (Garry) Adams, College Station, TX, Sandy (Steve) Tarver, Humble, TX; brother – Richard Stone, Caldwell, TX; 15 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and numerous friends who blessed his life whom he considered family. Pallbearers will be Don Cole, Mike Smith, Pearley Freeman, Lynn Johnson, Bobby Anderson, Dan Harris, Wade Ward, Don Emery, and Aaron Hill. Honorary pallbearers will be Baptist Memorial Hospice. Memorials may be made to Mississippi Alzheimer's Association, 1900 Dunburton St., Suite 1, Jackson, MS 39216.
