Obituary

Jane Dannel, age 91, left this world on July 2, 2024, at Trinity Healthcare in Columbus, MS. Visitation will be Friday, July 12, from 3:00 - 5:00 P.M. at Lowndes Funeral Home. There will be no formal funeral service, as she requested.

Born April 14, 1933, in New Albany, MS, to the late James Goodman Armstrong and Thelma Reid Armstrong, Jane graduated from W. P. Daniel High School (renamed New Albany High School) in 1951. In 1955, she earned her bachelor's degree from the Mississippi State College for Women (now Mississippi University for Women), where she formed lifelong friendships.

Jane lived a full, fun-loving, and adventurous life. She flew to Canada in an open cockpit plane with her husband, Dan, an accomplished pilot. She camped in the Tennessee mountains, hiked in Austria and Romania, and snowshoed in Colorado. Closer to home, she was a regular at The Fitness Factor exercise classes for many years and treasured the friendships she made there. She was an active member of Fairview Baptist Church for over 50 years and particularly enjoyed assisting with the Sunday School records and participating in the 55+ Ministry. Her Fairview friends and the church staff provided invaluable support throughout her years in Columbus.

Jane had an incredible work ethic. She served as an executive secretary for a variety of organizations early in her career. When her family moved to Columbus in 1970, she joined Golden Triangle Regional Medical Center (now Baptist Memorial Hospital) as a medical transcriptionist. In 1972, she began her 27-year career with the Columbus Pathology Laboratories as a medical transcriptionist and medical secretary. Jane also valued being of service and volunteered for numerous causes, including the Hurricane Kathrina cleanup organized by the Fairview Baptist Church Disaster Relief Ministry.

Devoted to her family, Jane attended countless horse shows, band concerts, softball games, and beauty pageants. She was selected as the Columbus "Mother of the Year" in 1974 based on an essay by her daughter, Kathy.

The birth of her grandson, Chase, in 1994, brought a new level of joy to her life as his "Nan." During his school years, she could often be found on area golf courses watching his golf tournaments.

In addition to her parents, Jane is preceded in death by her husband, A. Baugh "Dan" Dannel; her sister, Christine Kulinski; and brother James Sherrel Armstrong. She is survived by her four daughters, a step-daughter, and their husbands: Kathy Dannel (Steve) Vitcak; Mimi (Thomas "Walter" Gardner) Dannel; Patty (Bobby) Taylor; Debbie (Mark) Rigdon; Lynn (Barry) Morgan; and by her grandson, Chase Taylor.

The family is very grateful to the staff at Trinity Healthcare for their care in Jane's final years. Memorial donations may be made to Fairview Baptist Church, Disaster Relief Fund, 127 Airport Blvd, Columbus, MS 39702; the Alzheimer's Association, Mississippi Chapter, 207 W. Jackson St., Suite F, Ridgeland, MS 39157; or a charity of your choice.
