April 3, 1949 – August 2, 2016
Samuel Jerome Duckworth was born on April 3, 1949, to Sam and Ruth Duckworth, but was known as "Jerry" and "Pops" to his family and friends. Jerry was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, a member of Patterson American Legion, and a Lifetime Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Columbus, MS. Jerry fought hard to rid his body of the disease that took him from us on August 2, 2016.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior to service at Lowndes Funeral Home and Crematory in Columbus, MS.
Jerry and Margie Duckworth were married on April 01, 1994 and enjoyed many years of working together on projects, spending time on the Tennessee River, cooking for family and friends, riding their motorcycles, and watching Alabama football. During football season, you could always find a large group at "Pop's Man Cave" yelling, "Roll Tide!" He also enjoyed their four-legged babies, Penney Lane and Sandy Lou, who were constant companions. Jerry formerly worked for Gulf States Paper Corporation, Weyerhaeuser Company, and Omnova Solutions. Jerry was known for "Doing Things His Own Way".
Preceding Jerry from this life are his parents, brother, niece, and two sisters-in-law. He is survived by his wife, Margie and biological children, daughters-Kim (Todd) Dudley, Sandy (Chuck) McDaniel, and son-TJ Duckworth. Jerry and Margie considered all of their children as "ours", additionally-Michael (Robbin) Pritchett, Hebo (Pam) Pritchett, and Jeremy (Rita) Robertson. Jerry and Margie had no biological children together but chose Dana Moorhead and Clint Kyles as their children also.
He was blessed with numerous grandchildren who spent time with him, helped take care of him, and loved their Pops. They are Haley, Hunter, Caroline, Sam, Nick, Courtney, Chandler, Dylon, Jordan, Taylor, Preslee, Rori, Brandy, Dalton, and Hannah.
Also surviving are his siblings, sister-Diane (Bruce) Allen, Marilyn (Mike) Driver, and brother-Arthur (Betty) Duckworth, sisters-in-law-Mary Dillard, Brenda (Bobby) Posey; brother-in-law-Joe (JoAnn) Malone. Jerry and Margie had extended family, which was a huge part of their life-David and Diane Gray, Danny and Dean Moorhead, Mac and Karon Hall, Chad, Megan, Sarah, and Suzanna Ruffin, and John Collins.
The family would like to extend a Thank You to all for the prayers, love, visits, and acts of love shown during his illness and his departing. They also express sincere gratitude to Bobbie Sue Pearson, Nurses, and Staff to Hospice of West Alabama, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
