Mr. Newell, lovingly known as John, Jim, Jim-John, JW (Jubby), Uncle Jim, and Papaw was born on July 17, 1932, to the late John W. Newell, Sr. and Alma Mae (Johnson) Newell. He was raised in the Steens Community, graduated from Millport High School, where he played football. He attended Mississippi State University, where he studied business. Mr. Newell was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, as a Corporal in the US Army and served his country from 1953 -1955. Following his service in the army, he began working at American Bosch (United Technologies Electrosystems) as a Material Handler and later as a Planner.
Jim was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, was a faithful choir member, and maintained the church accounting records. He also served on the Columbus Auxiliary Police Force alongside his brother, the late Louis Ervin Newell, who was a former Assistant Chief of Police in Columbus.
He was the kind of person who would drop everything to help a friend, family member or church member.
Jim is survived by his daughter; Pam and husband Mike Adair, son, Dennis, and wife Marcia Newell, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, cousins, and dear friends.
The family wishes to thank North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice, NMMC 3rd Floor Nursing staff, Trinity Nursing and Assisted Living, and the members of Calvary Baptist Church for their love and support.
