Jimmie Lee Nelms, 85, of Columbus, MS passed away Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Baptist Memorial Hospital - GT, Columbus, MS. Visitation was Monday, February 24, 2014 from 5-7 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 10 AM at Fairview Baptist Church, Columbus, MS with Bro. Tommy Gillon officiating and Bro. Sammy Crawford and Bro. Breck Ladd assisting. Interment will be in Belzoni Cemetery, Belzoni, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS directing. Mr. Nelms was born October 28, 1928 in Ruleville, MS to the late Rupert L and Mary Ward Boyd Nelms. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, Columbus, MS. Mr. Nelms served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard and Army Reserve, retiring as full colonel. In addition to his parents, Mr. Nelms is preceded in death by brother - Edward Nelms and son - Jimmie Lee Nelms, Jr. Mr. Nelms is survived by wife - Bettye Nelms, Columbus, MS; son - Michael Allen (Jan) Nelms, Caledonia, MS; daughters - Elizabeth (Mike) Smith, Columbus, MS and Judy Carol Nelms. Little Rock, MS; sister - Helen Grant, Isola, MS; grandchildren - Christin (Robert) Pack, Rebecca (Jeremy) Harris, Jennifer (Paul) Strom, David (Lauren) Smith, and Brittany Seymour; great grandchildren - Drew Pack, Carter Pack, Cam Harris, Taylor Strom, and Evan Strom. Pallbearers will be Mr. Nelms's nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Parkinson's Aquatic Therapy Group YMCA, Fairview Walking Club Members, and members of Ray Crosby's and Ken Linton's Sunday School Class.
