Joan Virginia Fowler, 82, of Columbus, MS passed away Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – GT in Columbus, MS.

Visitation will be Monday, February 12, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1211 18th Avenue North, Columbus, MS. Service will be Monday, February 12, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Our Savior Lutheran Church, with Pastor David Hartung officiating. Private family interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery, with Lowndes Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Fowler was born July 23, 1941, in Detroit, MI, to the late John Stuart Hewitt and Margarethe Evelyn Henrietta Fischer Hewitt. Mrs. Fowler received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education at Potsdam State University of New York and a Master of Music in Music Education at Ithaca College. Mrs. Fowler was a music teacher in Michigan and New York State. She played the organ at numerous churches throughout her life – the latest being Our Savior Lutheran Church in Columbus, MS, where she was also a member. She was also a member of New Hope Silver Seniors. Mrs. Fowler loved God first, her family, and also loved cooking special meals and desserts. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Fowler is preceded in death by her husband- Bruce Owen Fowler.

Mrs. Fowler is survived by her son- John (Dawn) Mushtare of Oneonta, NY; daughters- Malena Mushtare of Columbus, MS, and Carisa (Dan) Duston of Columbus, MS; grandchildren- Erin (Cailey Bardwell) Mushtare of Buffalo, NY, Jackson Mushtare of Fredonia, NY, and Danica Duston of Columbus, MS; brother- Martin (Janet) Hewitt of Spokane, WA; sister- Kathleen Hewitt of San Ramon, CA; first husband- Donald (Jan) Mushtare of Brooksville, FL, and step-son- Richard Fowler, of Ypsilanti, MI.
