Obituary

John Morris McDill, Sr., 67 of Steens, Ms passed away Monday, November 19, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Birmingham, AL. Visitation will be Friday, November 23, 2012 from 6-9pm at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 2pm at Union Chapel Baptist Church, Ethelsville, AL with Bro. Melvin Mordecai officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Rowan Cemetery, Caledonia, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS directing. Mr. McDill was born November 10, 1945 in Pickens County, AL to the late Morris Mathis and Lorene McDowell McDill. He was a lifetime resident of Lowndes County and a member of Union Chapel Baptist Church, Ethelsville, Al. Mr. McDill was a self-employed logger for McDill Logging for over 40 yrs. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, Member and Former Commander of American Legion Post 69, Columbus, MS, Fourth District Area Commander of the State of Mississippi, and also a member of the VFW. Mr. McDill enjoyed fishing and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and his friends. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife-Rita McDill, sister-Betty McDill Kyles and grandson-Jacob Morris McDill. Mr. McDill is survived by his wife-Mary Lucas McDill, Steens, MS, sons-John "Little John" McDill, Jr. , Steens, MS, Shawn (Jenny) McDill, Caledonia, MS, Shay (Gale) McDill, Caledonia,MS, Chad McDill, Caledonia, MS, daughter- Breeanna McDill, Steens, MS, stepsons-Eddie Fortner, Murfreesboro, TN, Lonnie (Rachel) Lucas , Clay (Jennifer) Lucas, Adam Lucas, step-daughter-LeAnn (Bobby) Lucas all of Columbus, MS, 19 grandchildren, and one great grandchild, sisters- Virgie McDill, Caledonia, MS, Rachel Rowle, Nettleton, MS, Nettie Edmonds, Caledonia, MS, Kay Childs, Steele, MO, Barbara Dillard, Greenwood Springs, MS, brothers-Armond McDill, Waymon McDill and Jerry McDill all of Caledonia, MS. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Pate, James Edwards, Sid Wright, Clanton Johnson, Johnny Swink and Justin "T-Bone" E. Holliman. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and members of the American Legion, Larry Valentine, Jerry Gibson, Alton Hildreth and all Staff of the 5th and 6th Floor CCU at the VA Medical Center, Birmingham, AL. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 16808, Jackson, MS 39236, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38101.
