Obituary

Joshua (Josh) Floyd Scott, age 50, passed away on July 22, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, Mississippi. Josh was born on August 2, 1974, to his loving parents, Icie Scott and William (Sonny) Scott, of Woodland, Mississippi.

Josh, affectionately known as "Coach Scott" was a devoted educator, coach, and community servant whose life was defined by leadership, service, and commitment to others.

A proud graduate of Mississippi State University, Josh earned his Bachelor's degree in Social Studies in 1996. That same year, he began his career in education and athletics at Caledonia High School, serving as the Offensive Line Coach until 1998. Over the years, he took on numerous coaching roles, including Head Coach of Cross Country (2000–2003), Head Coach of Boys Track (2006–2008), and most notably, Head Coach of Varsity Boys Basketball (1996–2017).

In 2010, Josh furthered his dedication to education by earning a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from the Mississippi University for Women. From 2011 until 2025, he proudly served as the Athletic Director for Caledonia Schools, a role in which he guided and expanded the athletic program with passion and excellence. His dedication earned him multiple nominations for the MHSAA Athletic Director of the Year (2022–2025).

Outside of the realm of education, Josh gave himself selflessly to his community. He was a volunteer firefighter for District One in Lowndes County, Mississippi for several years, where he was once honored as Firefighter of the Year. He was also an Eagle Scout, a distinction that exemplified the values he carried throughout his life.

Josh's influence will be felt for generations through the students he taught, athletes he coached, and the community he served so faithfully.

Above all his accomplishments, Josh's greatest pride and deepest joy came from his family. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a loyal son and brother, and a steadfast role model to his nieces and nephews. Josh cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, whether cheering from the sidelines, gathering for Sunday meals, or simply enjoying quiet time at home. His love was steady, generous, and unconditional. He instilled in his children the values of hard work, humility, and kindness—lessons that will continue to shape their lives for years to come.

Josh's life was firmly rooted in his Christian faith. He lived each day guided by the principles of integrity, compassion, and service to others. Whether in his roles as coach, educator, firefighter, or friend, he embodied the spirit of Christ in both word and deed. His unwavering belief in God's grace brought him strength, especially during his hardest battles, and gave him peace in his final days. Josh's faith was not just a belief, it was a way of life, visible in how he treated people, how he led, and how he loved.

Josh was preceded in death by his grandparents, J.B. Scott Jr and Betty Maud Pumphrey Scott and Floyd Calvin Eaton and Sarah Lee Clements Eaton.

Josh is survived by his wife, Maria Scott; his parents, William and Icie Scott; his children, Brooke Scott, Taylor Stephens, and Madison (Carson) Traywick; his brothers, Hank (Stacie) Scott and Harmon (Beth) Scott; his niece and nephews, Hannah and Liam Grey, Carter, Lee, Robert, Josh, and James Scott.
