Lawrence Mayo "Hoose" Atkins, Sr., 73 of Columbus, MS passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, Columbus, MS. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 25, 2013 from 6-8 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 11 AM at Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Elbert Wheat officiating and Mr. Tommy Johnson assisting. Interment will be in Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Mr. Atkins was born September 30, 1939 in Millport, Alabama. He was a member of 7th St. Church of Christ, Columbus, MS and did volunteer work at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, Columbus, MS. Mr. Atkins retired in 1998 from Omnova Solutions after working as department manager for 33 years. He was a great family man and provided for his family. Mr. Atkins is preceded in death by his mother-Bertha Todd and son-Michael "Tony" Atkins. Mr. Atkins is survived by his wife-Irene Campbell Atkins, Columbus, MS; son- Chris (Carol) Atkins and Larry (Angie) Atkins, Jr. both of Columbus, MS; grandchildren-Aimee Atkins and Kristyn Atkins; step-granddaughter- Ashli Gilliam; 2 great grandchildren and 7 step great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Chris Atkins, Larry Atkins, Jr., Curtis Heatherly, Winfred Oyler, Alexander Blunt and Pat Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be Lowell Hughes, Roy King, Tommy Johnson, Kenneth Nichols, Hudson Adams and Baptist Memorial Hospital CCU Staff and Nurses.
