Lewis Coleman Robertson, 88, of Indianola, Ms and formerly of Columbus, Ms, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at his home.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 13, 2020 from 10:00 - 11:00 AM at Lowndes Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM in the chapel with Rev. Al Hamm officiating, Interment will be at 1:00 PM in Sardis Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Elrod, AL with Lowndes Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Robertson was born September 23, 1931, in Tuscaloosa County, AL and was one of ten children born to the late Lonzo and Della Driver Robertson. He worked with his father as a farmer and forester until enlisting in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict. While in the military, he received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was later employed by Wilcutt Block & Supply in Tuscaloosa, AL, until he transferred to Columbus, MS, in 1972, operating the Wilcutt Block & Supply until his retirement in 1997. In addition to his work, his church was of utmost importance. Having become a Christian at the age of 38, his intent was to serve the Lord wholeheartedly. Along with four other families, he assisted in establishing Victory Freewill Baptist Church and Victory Christian Academy in Columbus, MS. He was faithful in his ministry to the Lord, his family, and his fellow man. Much of his free time in the next 40 plus years were spent in the ministry of the church and the school. He loved sharing his home in the country with family and friends. Many happy days were spent there with his children and grandchildren. They fished, hunted, watched the European Red Deer, and visited the Indian Field and creek where two different Indian tribes had lived in the 700/800's. For ten years, he offered Mill Creek Place as heave of res to people coming from across the country for a special brain injury treatment center nearby. One year visitors came from 22 states and three foreign countries. Uncle Bunky Williams, A local and well-known artist, and personality painted a 60 foot mural of the property on the front of the building. Endearing friendships were made during those ten years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Robertson is preceded in death by his wife, Elma Rae (Kitty); two daughters- Constance (Connie) Atalla and Carmon Roberts; three brothers- Eulie, Winston and Edward Robertson; and three sisters- Mildred Hudson, Hildred Johnson, and Dotty Robertson.
Mr. Robertson leaves to cherish his memory- his wife of twenty-five years- Marjorie; brother- Marshall (Nell) Robertson; sisters- Trudel (Trudy) Hickman and Linda McAteer; sister-in-law- Mavis (Winston) Robertson; three grandchildren- Neville (Trey) Parsons, III, London Roberts, and Amber Holt; four great-grandchildren- Madson, David Coleman, Caden Holt, and Veda Parsons; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jim Harrell, Kevin Harrell, Jerry Tilley, Ronnie Smith, Scott Whitehead, and Gene Colley. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Victory Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Victory Freewill Baptist Church or Victory Christian Academy, Columbus or to a favorite charity.
