Obituary

Madge Brooks Ivey, beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, died peacefully on March 19, 2025, surrounded by her family and wonderful staff at Trinity Nursing Home in Columbus, Mississippi.  She was born on December 8, 1930, in Kosciusko, Mississippi.  She was 94.

Madge is preceded in death by her parents – Herbert and Jewel Terry Brooks; sister – Anne Brooks Stepp; and brother – Calvin Brooks.  She is survived by her four children – Betty Ivey (Cliff) Whipple, of Canton, Georgia, Cassie Ivey (Jimmy) Derden, of Columbus, Mississippi, Brooks (Heidi) Ivey, of Austin, Texas, and David Ivey (fiancée, Ashley Thompson), of Atlanta, Georgia; six grandchildren – Scott Studdard, Ivey (Ken) Ivy, Cindy Vaughn, Suzy (Adam) Boehmer, Jason (Lucy) McKellar, and Joseph (Erin) Studdard; nine great grandchildren – Kaitlin Stark (Logan) Cornelison, Layton Vaughn, Camden Vaughn, Carsyn Vaughn, Jack Stark, Caston McKellar, Day Ivy, Eli McKellar, and Wren Ivy.

Madge started her career with her dear friend, Cile Andrews, where she was her assistant Kindergarten teacher.  In later years, Madge went on to help establish and lead the area teachers for the first Head Start Program in Columbus. She also spent many years managing apartments in Columbus and well into retirement age, she also managed apartments in Starkville, Mississippi.  She had many Mississippi State Bulldogs as tenants and she used to say, "Jackie Sherrill had me on speed dial," because she had to roust a few out of bed who were late for practice and help Coach keep them in line.  She watched the games every week and called them "my boys."

Upon retirement, Madge moved to Georgia to be with Betty and David.  She spent 15 years in Georgia before coming back to Columbus, where she moved into independent living at Trinity.  The family wishes to thank Trinity Health Care for their thoughtful service and tender care to Madge. They became another family for her, and she was much loved by them all.

At her request, the family will gather for a private service for her in Dauphin Island, AL, where many family memories were made.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to Trinity Health Care (Methodist Senior Services) https://www.mss.org/give-today/ or to the Columbus-Lowndes Humane Society (her favorite charity) https://clhumanesociety.org/donate-2/, or to a charity of your choice.
