Mamie Bradshaw Burkes, 92 of Starkville, MS passed away December 30, 2013 at Oak Tree Manor, Amory, MS. Visitation will be Friday, January 3, 2014 from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. The funeral will follow at 2:00 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Clifton Curtis officiating and Rev. Sammy Crawford assisting. Interment will be at Starkville Memorial Gardens, Starkville, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Mrs. Burkes was born January 9, 1921 in Smith county, MS to the late Irvin and Vesta McNeese Bradshaw. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years - D.W. "Jeep" Burkes and many brothers and sisters. Mrs. Burkes was in nurse's training in Jackson, MS and used her skills to raise three children. She was married to an officer in the United States Air Force who was a veteran of World War II. She saw a lot of world as a military wife and adapted to every situation. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker. Her focus in life was family. She was extremely inventive, industrious and energetic. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Starkville, MS for many years. She loved the Lord and served Him with her life. She is now in her heavenly home and praising God forever. Mrs. Burkes is survived by a sister - Mary Ella Stuart, brothers - Rayford (Melba) Bradshaw and David (Betty) Bradshaw, daughters - Ramona (Bob) Crigler, Columbus, MS and Rebecca (the late James Harrell) of Gautier, MS, son - David (Debbie) Burkes, Starkville, MS, grandchildren - Christa Smith, Jenny (Michael) Bowers, Mark (Sarah) Crigler, Derek (Mary) Moreton, Dane Moreton and eight great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Alec Smith, Mark Crigler, Derek Moreton, Dane Moreton, Michael Bowers and Charles Patrick.
