Martha Jane Slawson, Janie, passed away under hospice care at Trinity Healthcare at the age of 93 on January 7, 2024, in Columbus, MS. She was born Martha Jane Reeves to Bertie and Clara Reeves on August 16, 1930, in Ecru, MS.
Janie was raised and educated in Gunnison, MS and moved to Rosedale, MS where she married Paul T. Slawson in 1950. They moved to Columbus, MS in 1960. Other places they lived included Leland and Starkville before moving back to Columbus.
Janie worked several jobs to help support her family: telephone operator, retail clerk, Baskin Robbins manager, but her favorite job was as a clerk in the Oktibbeha County Chancery Clerk's office in Starkville.
She loved traveling with her husband to insurance conventions and with church missionary trips. She also served Fairview Baptist Church as a greeter for years.
Janie is survived by her children: Tom Slawson (Debbie), Cindy Slawson, Amy Wehr (Rob), and Kenneth Slawson (Tracey), grandchildren: Steve Carmichael (Erin), Lindsay Arevalo (Gil), Josh Carmichael (Brittney), and Maggie Wehr, and five great grandchildren.
Janie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother: Bud Reeves, her sister: Anne Masterson, her son: John Paul Slawson, and her daughter: Penny Carmichael.
A graveside service was held at Memorial Gardens of Columbus. Funeral arrangements were by Lowndes Funeral Home.
