Hettie Murle Wheeler Jaynes, 87, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2022, at her residence in
Columbus.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 6, 2022, at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS from 6:00-
8:00pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Fairview Baptist Church,
Columbus, MS at 1:00 pm with Bro. Sammy Crawford and Bro. Tommy Gillon officiating.
Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Services are under the direction of
Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS.
Mrs. Jaynes was born March 3, 1935, in Lowndes County, Mississippi to the late Blanche Smith
Wheeler and Arlando Berry Wheeler and was a longtime resident of Columbus. She retired as
Office Manager at AMBAC Federal Credit Union and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Carl Edwin
Jaynes and her brother, William Eddy Wheeler.
She was a 1953 graduate of Liberty High School, Liberty, Al where she served as class
valedictorian. Murle was an excellent cook and enjoyed making her famous caramel cakes for
friends and family. She also loved Crimson Tide football.
Murle is survived by her daughter, Cindy Jaynes Wingo of Columbus, son Dr. Jeffrey Jaynes of
Dallas, TX; grandchildren Lauren (Brad) Vest of Mabank, TX, Lindsay (Jimmy) Wells of Schoniach,
Germany, Hunter (Victoria) Wingo of Fort Worth, TX, Mary Margaret Jaynes of Atlanta, GA; two
great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Smitty Burks, Tim Cox, Scott Duke, Roy Duke, Karl Weems, and Hunter Wingo.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Liberty High School Class of 1953, J.B. Cox, John D. Dollar, Danny
Smith, Roman Maier, and Craig Barfield.
The family wishes to thank her caregiver and friend, Brenda Williams for all the loving care she
provided as well as the doctors and nurses at Baptist Hospice.
