Obituary

Randall Henry Butler, 63, passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in Columbus.

Visitation will be held from 1:00-3: 00 pm on Thursday, May 23, 2019, at Lowndes Funeral Home in Columbus, MS, followed by Funeral Services at 3:00 pm from the Funeral Home Chapel. Private interment services will be held at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Mr. Butler was born April 14, 1956, in Atlanta, GA, to Kathryn L. and Henry Butler, Jr., he attended school in Brownwood, TX. He transferred to Marion County High School in Guin, AL, where he lettered in football and was a member of the winning 1973/1974 State Championship Football Team, his Senior year. He later attended Auburn University. A very technologically gifted individual, Mr. Butler was very skilled and knowledgeable in the radio communications field. He enjoyed work, servicing communications radios for local Police Departments, and became very well-known in his field. He helped design and install the emergency communication network for the Tombigbee Lock and Dam System. He also worked as a contractor consultant on a NASA communications satellite. He later joined the railroad where he served as a Signal Maintainer, and later working on locomotives as a Chief Mechanical Officer, at the time of his death he was employed with the  Columbus and Greenville Railway as an Assistant General Manager. Towards the end of his career, he had played an integral part of the successful partnership between Steel Dynamics in Columbus, and the railroad. Intelligent and Mechanically Inclined, he was an Excellent Troubleshooter and able to Fix Most Anything. , Mr. Butler was a loyal and devoted fixture among businesses and in his community. A member of the Boy Scouts of America, he served as Cub Scout Leader for Troop 33 and was the recipient of the Presidential Silver Beaver Award. He had many hobbies, including: classic cars and a love of smoking and grilling various meats, he grilled out several times a week and enjoyed bringing steaks and roasts to family get-togethers. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his upbeat and uplifting personality, never letting anything get him down, he chose to remain happy and positive. Though personally private, he cared deeply for others, always putting the needs of others above his own. A proud and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, he will be greatly missed by those who knew him.

Mr. Butler is survived by his wife of 43 years Gloria Butler; children: Tony Butler and Melanie Butler both of Columbus; parents: Henry and Kathryn Butler of Guin, AL; brother: Steve (Teresa) Butler of Tuscaloosa, AL; sisters: Donna Bozeman of Winfield, AL, and Nina (Clint) Butler of McCalla, AL; and two grandchildren: Alexander Johnson and Mya Taylor.
