Robert Stanley Colvin, Sr., 90, of Columbus, MS passed away Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Trinity Nursing Home, Columbus, MS.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 22, 2017, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. Funeral services will follow on Thursday, June 22, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend James Black officiating. Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery, Millport, AL with Lowndes Funeral Home directing.
Robert S. Colvin, Sr. (Daddy Bob) was born October 6, 1926, in Columbus, Mississippi to the Late Hunter L. Colvin, Sr. and Lona Arnold Colvin. Mr. Colvin was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Mary "Mama Jean" Reynolds Colvin, his sisters, Sue Ridenhour, Gladys Rinaldi, and his brother, Hunter L. (Jim) Colvin, Jr.
Mr. Colvin moved to Lamar County, Alabama at about age 6. He attended Star Elementary and Lamar County High School. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. He was a member of Shriners International and a third degree Mason. He joined the United States Navy in 1943 and served until 1946 on board the USSLSMR 405. The 405 was a Landing Ship Medium Rocket Craft. His Navy travels took him from Great Lakes, Illinois to Pearl Harbor and later to Anuta Island.
After serving in the Navy, Mr. Colvin attended Livingston State Teachers College in Livingston, Alabama. While in college he met and married Mary Reynolds Smith Colvin. He worked for many years for Columbus Hardware and the Russell Company. He and Mrs. Colvin later went on to operate Colvin's Grocery, Columbus Sewing Center, Fairlane Cleaners and later the Country Kitchen and Colvin's Barbeque. He loved to play golf and he was a lifelong fan of The Alabama Crimson Tide.
Survivors include his seven children: Sandy Weathers of Columbus, Lynn (Henry) DeHart of Ocala, Florida, Bobby (Sally) Colvin, Goodlettsville, Tennessee, Doug (Sylvia) Colvin, West Point, Ms., Deb (Jim) Hunt, York, Pennsylvania, Scott (Kerri) Colvin, Acworth,Ga., and Tammy Adams of Columbus. Mr. Colvin also leaves behind 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 5 great, great-grandchildren as well as his brother, Billy Joe Colvin and his sister Regina Lollar. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are his Grandsons: Kevin Johnson, Kirk Johnson, Chris Weathers, Robby DeHart, Brad DeHart, Clay Colvin, Ian Hunt, Jonathan Colvin, Cody Shappley and Hunter Shappley. Honorary Pallbearers: Mr. Mac McCollum, Mr. Billy Crossley, Mr. Ben Hardin, Dr. Doyle Summerall, Older Members of Green Oaks Golf Course, and the Staff of Trinity Personal Care.
Memorial may be made to St. Stephens Methodist Church Building Fund, 800 Tuscaloosa Road, Columbus, MS 39702.
