Obituary

A lifetime of caring for others with the love of Christ was quietly made complete just after sunset on August 22, 2017 when Ruby Dillon peacefully left her earthly home. The mom, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, registered nurse, friend and comforter to many arrived at heaven's gates knowing her work on earth was accomplished.

Ruby was 87-years-old when she completed her life on earth. In those many years, the one constant theme of everything she did was quite simple: care for others.

For those 87 years, she was a sister to her identical twin, Ruth Fletcher who still lives in Tennessee. Since they were separated by geography, Ruby and Ruth would spend countless nights on the phone visiting with each other and then turning on the same TV show and watching and laughing together for hours. A two-hour call was normal and it brought joy to those that might be in the room to hear the identical laughs and voices enjoying time together.

For almost 60 years, she was a loving Mom to three children. Her husband, Joe worked in the West Virginia coal mines when their first child died soon after birth. Three other children were then born over the next six years. Debbie, the youngest, Mark the middle child and Joe. The family came to Columbus early in the 1960s and Ruby moved into the home where she would live until the final five weeks of her life. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church for 40 years.

Raising two boys and a girl required many different skills for Ruby. She would spend time always caring and mothering Mark and Joe in activities for boys while doing the same for Debbie as a young lady. She encouraged friends of her children to come over and spend time at the Dillon house. She would say later that was a good way to keep an eye on everyone and care for them.

She and her husband would do anything for their children and grandchildren. When the children of the neighborhood wanted to have a field to play wiffle-ball, the Dillons were happy to tear down a fence and turn their back-yard into a miniature baseball field. While the children played and laughed, she provided non-stop refreshments and bandaids for everyone; even people that she didn't know.

That intense gift of caring for family and others that she didn't even know is who Ruby Dillon was. For 35 years and three months, she was a registered nurse at Baptist Hospital in Columbus. Most of that time was spent in the recovery room of the hospital.

She was the first touch that tens of thousands of patients hands felt as they woke up from surgery. She was the first caring eyes that strangers saw when they became alert. She was the first voice they heard to calm their fears. She would assure these new friends that she was there and she wasn't leaving and that each one of them was going to be ok.

Known as Mamaw to her grandchildren, Ruby left earth to move into the arms of God and there the angels of heaven returned to her the love and care that she gave to so many.

She is preceded in death by her father Wade Campbell and her mother Lillian Campbell. She has three children, Debbie Murray (Stan), Mark Dillon (Sheila) and Joe Dillon (Janet), all of Columbus. She has four grandchildren, Brad (Meredith) Dillon, Chase (Christie) Dillon and Rebecca Dillon, Cassie (Gray) Griffin and six great-grandchildren, Vincent, Selena, Sterling, Isabella and Eva Dillon and River Griffin.

She has one sister, a twin, Ruth Fletcher, that currently lives in Rockwood, TN.

A celebration service for her life was held on August 25, 2017 at Lowndes Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Gillon officiating. Memorials requested to the Columbus-Lowndes Humane Society.
