Elisha Sherrell Hemphill, 84 of Columbus, MS passed away Friday, March 25, 2022 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Hospice, Columbus, MS.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 29, 2022, from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS.  A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM in the Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Johnny Stokes officiating.  Interment will be at Ethelsville Baptist Church Cemetery, Ethelsville, AL with Lowndes Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Hemphill was born November 23, 1937, to the late Herbert and Edna Sullivan Hemphill in Winston County, MS.  He was a Presbyterian in faith.  He was a retired Auto Mechanic.  Mr. Hemphill loved dirt track racing and helped build Magnolia Motor Speedway where he grated and watered the track until his retirement at age 80.  Mr. Hemphill was born with a green thumb and was an avid gardener.  Nothing gave him more pleasure than working the land and watching the seeds and seedlings he planted flourish and grow.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Hemphill was preceded in death by his brothers - Pearson Hemphill and his twin brother – Darrell Hemphill and sister – Neva Roy.

Mr. Hemphill is survived by his wife of 60 years – Martha Whitten Hemphill; daughter – Amanda Hemphill; sisters – Dean Conn, Wallene (Dave) Lease and Faye Hughes; and numerous nieces, nephews and in laws who loved him dearly.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Conn, P.J. Hughes, Rudy Whitten, Jonathan Whitten, Eric Whitten and Phillip Whitten. Honorary pallbearers will be Chuck Cook, Mark Stokes, Bobby Cranford, Charles "Mutt" Abrams, Dr. Slater Lowery and his "coffee drinking Buddies".
