Obituary

William L. "Bill" Plyler, 90, of Columbus, MS passed away Thursday, March 23, 2023, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle, Columbus, MS.

A visitation will be Friday, April 7, 2023, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS.  A memorial service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 pm with Bro. Tommy Gillon and Bro. Breck Ladd officiating.  A graveside will follow at Kennedy City Cemetery in Kennedy, Alabama in the Plyler family plot with Lowndes Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Plyler was born on July 22, 1932, in Kennedy, Alabama to the late Lester and Pearl Plyler.  He was a graduate of Kennedy High School in Kennedy, AL, as well as Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS.  He was also a Korean War Veteran, a former member of the Columbus, MS Jaycees, a past member of the Columbus Country Club and Green Oaks Golf Club, and past President of the East Columbus Lions Club.  He retired as Manager of Materials Management for United Technologies in Columbus, MS.  He had many roles while at United Technologies, including Group Leader in Purchasing, Senior Purchasing Advisor for the Consolidated Purchasing Council, member of the Purchasing Association of Alabama, member of UTC Consolidated Purchasing of Mid-West Automotive, member of the Purchasing Training Council, and represented United Technologies Automotive Group on the Senior Purchasing Advisory Board of United Technology Corporation in Hartford, Connecticut.  Mr. Plyler was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, the John Wierengo Sunday School class, served as usher and greeter, participated on the Senior Adult Leadership Team, and was a member of the Senior Adult Choir.  He enjoyed golfing, working in his yard, and growing flowers and banana trees.  He even once got Yard of the Month.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Plyler is preceded in death by his sons – William David Plyler and Jeffrey Mark Plyler; and sister – Shirley Plyler Richardson.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years – Mary Ann Atkins Plyler; son – Philip Douglas (Leisha) Plyler of Spanish Fort, AL; 3 grandsons; 3 great-grandsons, and 1 great-granddaughter.  After 3 sons, 3 grandsons, and 3 great-grandsons, they welcomed a great-granddaughter to the family.
