Obituary

William Vincen "V" West, age 89, passed away Monday, May 14, 2018, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, Columbus, MS.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at 10:30 AM at Wesley United Methodist Church, Columbus, MS. Interment will be in Memorial Gardens, Columbus, MS, with Lowndes Funeral Home directing.

Mr. West was born on November 11, 1929 in Walker County, Alabama, to Henry Herman West and Arvie Nocle Sparks West, moving as a child with his family to Caledonia.

A three-year graduate of Caledonia High School 1946, Mr. West was named Mississippi State Star Farmer by the Future Farmers of America that year. He began his career in construction as a carpenter during the early years of housing demand growth as Columbus expanded East and North. Joining his father and brother Rudy, Mr. West opened a family construction business West and Sons in 1954 on Military Road. The company expanded and added building supply sales at a new location in East Columbus in 1955. Later they built and operated the West Craft Cabinets plant in the city's industrial park. He was a member of the Columbus Home Builders Association, serving a term as president. The two brothers entered real estate development in 1969 opening West Realty Company, still operating today as Coldwell Banker West Realty. In retirement, he became the official mail deliverer and coffee room counselor for the real estate office. A leader in Columbus Civil Community. In the 1960's Mr. West worked with the Columbus-Lowndes Community Chest fund drive serving as chairman. He was a charter member of the East Columbus Lions Club and later joined the Magnolia Kiwanis Club, serving a term as president. Mr. West continued to lead in the growth of economic development of the Columbus area in the Chamber of Commerce where he served a term as president, on the Columbus-Lowndes Industrial Development Foundation and on the Lowndes County Hospital Council to bring a new hospital to the area on the site of the current Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. He was an avid golfer and longtime member of Columbus Country Club, accumulating a total of eleven holes-in-one over the many years with a group of special golf buddies and family members.

An active member of Wesley United Methodist Church since 1963, he taught the Gleaners adult Sunday School Class for 50 years until 2017. He served on the founding board to build the Methodist Seniors Services Trinity Place retirement and healthcare facility in Columbus.

The eldest of four children, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Rudy West and Wayne West, and his sister- Faye West Jones.

Mr. West is survived by his wife of 69 years Anne Weeks West; four children, Lynn Spainhour (Pat), Bill West (Rita), Don West (Kathy), and Mary Ann Sheffield; seven grandchildren, Jon Spainhour, Jaimee Spainhour, Katie West Diggs (Wyn), Maggie Sheffield Dunnam (Daniel), Meredith Sheiffield Hester (Keith), Will West and JoAnna West; and five great-grandhcildren, Grant Hester, Brooke Gowan, West Diggs, Drake Diggs, and Ryder Diggs.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie West, Steve West, Greg Arinder, Rodger James, Brodie West, and Terry Westmoreland. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff and agents of Coldwell Banker West Realty.

Memorials may be made to the Methodist Senior Services Trinity Sunday School Fund or Wesley United Methodist Church.
